Raise Awareness for Better Hearing and Speech Month

« Back to BlogBy Sarah Donley

May is Better Hearing and Speech Month (BHSM) and this month we wanted to discuss opportunities for you to raise awareness about communication disorders. If you are a service provider who assists people with communication disorders, this month is a great chance to showcase your skills and raise awareness about your profession. Whether you’re an audiologist, an SLP or a student looking into this field, this month is your time to shine!

The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) has a bunch of ideas about raising awareness on their website including (but not limited to):

Engage on Social Media: Share relevant articles and facts about communication disorders, ask friends and family to share/repost your content and be sure to use the hashtag #BHSM.

Be Creative: If you’re in a school setting, try doing arts and crafts projects that show why communication is so important or do a journal prompt asking what communication means to the students.

Educate Your Colleagues: Putting reading materials in mailboxes, speaking at staff meeting s and taking opportunities to explain your services are just a few ways to tell your coworkers more about what you do when you’re in a school setting.

No matter how you choose to celebrate this month, we would love to hear about it! Be sure to use the hashtag #BHSM in your posts.
