Issue: This non-governmental organisation had experienced difficulties in agreeing with employee representatives the basis for agreeing pay increases across the organisation. This was due to fundamental differences of view about the appropriate level of internal relativities. As a result the organisation embarked on a reward and benefits strategy. At the same time they started to use a new, highly consultative approach to decision-making.

We gave support in: facilitating both the process for making decisions on how to take the review forward, as well as specialist advice on the pay and non-pay elements of the total reward system. This led to the development of an integrated set of proposals that included:

• a new approach to referencing pay against the market
• a new pay structure linked to career stages
• a competence based approach to career development, based on career stages a series of proposals covering a broad range of topics under the heading of 'reward', e.g expenses policies, flexible working arrangements and office space.
